Longtime Fairhope boys soccer coach Paul Stroud accepts new job

Just two days after announcing his retirement from Fairhope, Paul Stroud has already secured his next sideline role. The longtime Pirates boys soccer coach was officially introduced Wednesday afternoon as the new head coach at McGill-Toolen.

A New Chapter

Stroud arrives at McGill-Toolen with a clear sense of excitement for the unknown. After 26 years leading the program at Fairhope, Stroud noted that while he never grew tired of the training or the games, he is looking forward to the challenge of a new environment. According to Stroud, moving away from the muscle memory of a long-term tenure provides a refreshing perspective.

Legacy at Fairhope

Stroud leaves behind a monumental legacy at Fairhope, where he amassed a 447-145-49 record. Over his two-plus decades, his teams made 20 playoff appearances, secured 11 area or section championships, and reached the state semifinals seven times. He famously guided the Pirates to the Class 6A state title in 2009. Even during his final season, he led the team to a 16-7 record, ending only in a semifinal loss to the eventual 7A state champion, Auburn. Stroud also missed three seasons during his career while serving with the National Guard.

"If I’m proud of one thing in particular over the course of the last 26 years, I am proud of my players," Stroud said. "Whether we won a state championship or didn’t make the playoffs, our reputation was always the same – a team that is hard to play and plays with class, and I take a lot of pride in that."

The Road Ahead at McGill-Toolen

At his new post, Stroud will navigate the transition to the new Private School AA Division. He expressed intrigue regarding the move, suggesting that the position is a positive opportunity for the school's athletic future. In this new alignment, McGill-Toolen will compete in the highly competitive Area 1 against Faith Academy, St. Paul’s, St. Michael, and UMS-Wright.

McGill-Toolen athletic director John Repoll praised the hire, highlighting the balance of faith and experience that Stroud brings to the program. "Coach Stroud brings strong character, Catholic faith, and extensive experience to McGill Toolen Catholic and our men’s soccer program," Repoll stated. "His integrity and leadership will be a positive example both on and off the field for our students and student athletes."
