How Alabama fared in one of the country’s most prestigious food awards

Alabama took the national stage on Monday night as the culinary world gathered for one of the industry's most prestigious honors.

Representing Alabama on the National Stage

The 2026 James Beard Award’s Restaurant and Chef ceremony was held in Chicago on June 15, spotlighting the country’s most exceptional culinary talent and beloved dining institutions.

Birmingham’s own Bottega stood out as the state's sole finalist, earning a nomination in the competitive Outstanding Hospitality category. While the top honor ultimately went to Providence in Los Angeles, the recognition marks another milestone for the Birmingham staple. Other notable finalists in the category included Aria in Atlanta, Louie in Clayton, Missouri, and Ansots Basque Chorizos & Catering in Boise, Idaho.

A Legacy of Excellence

Since its doors first opened in 1988, Bottega has served as a crown jewel of the Alabama dining scene. Co-owned by Frank and Pardis Stitt, the restaurant has long been celebrated for its refined menu and inviting atmosphere.

While Bottega was the only Alabama restaurant to advance to the finals this year, the state’s culinary footprint remains strong. Earlier this year, six Alabama chefs were honored as semi-finalists across various categories, showcasing the depth of talent currently operating in 205.

Understanding the Honor

According to the James Beard Foundation, these awards are designed to celebrate exceptional skill while promoting sustainability, equity, and a healthy culinary culture. Established in 1990, the Restaurant and Chef Awards recognize excellence across the full spectrum of the industry, from high-end fine dining to casual local favorites.
