Human augmentation, bionic art, & how AI can help with disabilities (Enable: The Disability Podcast)
Viktoria Modesta is a bionic artist, innovator and Future Fellow at Evermay.
What does the future of the human body hold? Viktoria Modesta, a renowned bionic artist, model, singer, and innovator serving as a Future Fellow at Georgetown’s Evermay, recently sat down with Enable: The Disability Podcast to explore the intersection of human augmentation, prosthetic design, and the role of AI in empowering those with disabilities.
Defining Human Augmentation
Modesta describes human augmentation as the power to transcend biological boundaries. She draws parallels between everyday technology and specialized tools, noting, “The helpful examples that I like to think about is the way that a prosthetic or a spacesuit is a type of technology that transforms what we can do.” Modesta, who underwent a below-the-knee amputation of her left leg at age 20 following a severe birth injury, views these advancements as a way to reshape our capabilities.
Manipulating Biological Destiny
The dialogue touches on the evolving perception of disability. Modesta highlights a significant cultural shift, noting, “For the first time in history, we’re able to manipulate our biological destiny.” She reflects on her upbringing in Latvia, where the echoes of eugenics influenced how society viewed biology. “The big shift that’s happening now is that the power is going back to the people,” she said. “Individuals all around the world are thinking about how they are going to address their physical and mental capacity. It is much more than just a physical shift—it is a way where sci-fi reality is kind of becoming real.”
