Huntsville TV station’s news, weather app discontinued: Are more changes on the way?
Media group now owns two television stations in Rocket City.
Huntsville viewers are waking up to a new reality as significant shifts reshape the local television landscape.
Digital Consolidation in Rocket City
The WAAY 31 News and Weather app was officially discontinued this past Monday. In a move highlighting the integration of Huntsville's local media, the station’s website now redirects users directly to the WAFF 48 news portal. Furthermore, viewers may have noticed local news stories appearing simultaneously across afternoon broadcasts on both channels.
Gray Media's Growing Influence
These developments follow Atlanta-based Gray Media's strategic expansion in the market. Already the owner of WAFF, the media conglomerate acquired WAAY and nine additional stations from Allen Media Group last year in a deal valued at $171 million.
As the integration continues, WAFF meteorologist Brad Travis confirmed in a Facebook post that additional updates and changes are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. He also noted that WAFF weather broadcasts have been utilized on WAAY throughout recent weekends.
A Shift from Past Plans
This new direction marks a departure from strategies previously explored under Allen Media Group, which had initially aimed to implement "local weather coverage powered by The Weather Channel" across its national markets. The company ultimately scrapped the plan following widespread reports of potential layoffs affecting both local and national staff. At the time, the company cited "viewer and advertiser reaction" as the primary driver for reversing course on the initiative.
