Latest defense contracts prioritize 24/7 telehealth service... and torpedoes

The Department of Defense has announced a major boost to military healthcare accessibility, securing $25 million in additional funding to maintain vital telehealth services. As 205focus.com reported, the Department of Defense confirmed the funding this week, ensuring continued support for those serving our nation.

Expanding Telehealth Access

Eden Prairie-based contractor OptumHealth Care Solutions LLC has been tapped to oversee the Global Nurse Advice Line (GNAL) through December 17, 2026. The contract, awarded by the Defense Health Agency’s Professional Services Contracting Division in Falls Church, Virginia, utilizes fiscal year 2026 operations and maintenance funds.

The GNAL program remains a cornerstone of the Military Health System, offering 24/7 access to registered nurses for active-duty personnel, retirees, and their families. Whether members need immediate triage services, self-care guidance, or general health inquiries, the service remains a round-the-clock resource, according to Pentagon contract announcements released on June 17.

Modernizing Naval Defenses

In addition to health initiatives, the Pentagon is sharpening its tactical capabilities. General Dynamics Mission Systems Inc. in Manassas, Virginia, has been awarded a $117 million contract to upgrade the U.S. Navy’s MK 54 Lightweight torpedoes.

These surface ship and aircraft-launched anti-submarine weapons are receiving a significant technology infusion. Under the agreement managed by the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., General Dynamics will provide essential assembly kits, test equipment, spares, and specialized engineering and hardware support. The project is currently scheduled for completion by April 2029.
