Defense contractor hiring amid $25 million North Alabama facility expansion

Defense contractor L3Harris is ramping up its presence in North Alabama, marking a significant growth phase for its Huntsville operations.

Major Investment in Huntsville

In a statement released Monday, the company unveiled a $25 million investment in its Advanced Manufacturing Facility-South (AMF-South). This project adds 130,000 square feet of manufacturing space, bringing the company's total footprint across three Huntsville sites to approximately 670,000 square feet—a massive space equivalent to about 12 football fields.

Ken Bedingfield, president of L3Harris’ Missile Solutions division, noted that the expansion is essential to meet national defense demands. “The additional space allows us to lean forward and surge capacity in a way that directly aligns with the Department of War’s demand for critical munition acceleration,” Bedingfield said. “Huntsville’s expansion at AMF-South gives us the flexibility we need to grow quickly and continue delivering for our customers.”

Hiring Opportunities

With this expansion, L3Harris is actively seeking new talent to join its team. The company is currently hiring for a variety of roles, including mechanical and manufacturing engineering, project engineering, and quality control. They are also looking for skilled trades, specifically machinists and composite technicians.

A Growing Hub for Defense

The recent investment underscores the company's aggressive growth strategy, as L3Harris tripled its capital expenditure in Huntsville between 2024 and 2025. Currently, the city plays a pivotal role in the firm's operations, supporting more than half of its solid rocket motor programs through the production of inert components.

This momentum adds to the broader defense manufacturing surge across Alabama. As 205focus.com previously reported, Lockheed Martin broke ground on May 21 for an 87,000-square-foot munitions facility in Troy. That site is set to manufacture Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors and Next Generation Interceptor missiles.
