‘Unforgettable’: Well-known former Alabama lawmaker, judge John Amari dies

The Alabama community is mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant and local fixture. John E. Amari, a former Alabama state lawmaker and retired judge, passed away on May 27 at the age of 77, surrounded by his loved ones.

A Life of Service and Connection

Reflecting on his life, Amari’s family shared that while his professional accomplishments were immense, his personality was truly unforgettable. Known for his unique ability to bridge divides, he could walk into a room of people with conflicting viewpoints and leave them all laughing together.

Born in Jefferson County on Aug. 7, 1948, Amari was the son of Sicilian immigrants. His work ethic was forged early on the family farm and at the Huffman Curb Market in Trussville. Before his extensive legal and political career, Amari made his mark as a 1966 graduate of Banks High School and a state champion wrestler.

A Legacy Beyond the Courtroom

After graduating from the University of Montevallo and the Cumberland School of Law, he established the Amari Law Firm in 1974. His legal practice was defined by his commitment to his community; he was known for accepting trades of skills and labor from those unable to afford legal representation.

His career in public service spanned decades. After his 1978 election to the Alabama House of Representatives—a victory he famously attributed to being "Mae and Joe’s son from the Curb Market"—Amari served over 16 years in the Alabama Senate. He later transitioned to the bench, serving as a district judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit for a decade starting in 2008.

Remembering John Amari

"John leaves behind far more than a professional legacy," his family shared. "He leaves behind laughter. He leaves behind generosity. He leaves behind a family that adored him and a community that was better because he was part of it."

Amari is survived by his wife of 46 years, Teresa “Terri” Parker Amari, five children, and 17 grandchildren.
