Iconic medical drama gets major network spinoff: ‘I am incredibly excited’
The news series has yet to be named.
The television landscape is set to get a little more crowded as ABC officially prepares to expand the world of its long-running hit, Grey’s Anatomy. A brand-new spinoff is currently in the works, promising to bring fresh stories to the network during the 2026-2027 broadcast season.
New Horizons in Texas
According to Variety, the upcoming one-hour drama is slated to take place at a rural medical center in West Texas. The premise centers on a team providing care in an area described as the "last chance for care before miles of nowhere."
Leadership and Legacy
The project brings together heavy hitters from the original series. Shonda Rhimes, the visionary behind Grey’s Anatomy, is stepping in as co-creator and executive producer, while Grey’s star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo is also set to executive produce the new venture. It remains to be seen if Meredith Grey or other familiar faces will make an appearance in this unnamed series.
Meg Marinis, who has served as showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy since 2024, is taking on an executive producer role for this new chapter. "I am incredibly excited to expand the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ universe," Marinis said in a statement. "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from ‘Grey’s’ for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas."
A Growing Universe
This latest announcement marks another chapter in the storied history of the 22-year-old franchise. The Grey’s universe has previously spawned successful projects including Private Practice (2007–2013), Station 19 (2018–2024), and the digital series Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team, which debuted on ABC.com in 2018.
