Alcohol sales in Falkville didn’t pass by 1 vote. It passed by 2, town council learns
The town's journey to becoming a wet town came down to a dramatic recount when officials discovered one voter didn't actually live within town limits.
Raise a glass to the Town of Falkville!
The north Alabama community is officially set to transition into a wet town following a Town Council resolution passed this Monday to legalize alcohol sales within the town limits.
A Dramatic Recount
The path to this decision was far from routine. Following the May 19 referendum, it initially appeared that the motion had passed by a razor-thin margin of one vote. However, election officials soon discovered a complication: one individual who cast a ballot did not actually reside within the town limits.
During a May 26 canvassing meeting, officials confirmed that the ineligible voter had cast a "no" ballot. Upon further review, the final tally revealed the motion actually passed by two votes. Out of 230 total ballots cast, 116 voters supported the legalization of alcohol sales and distribution, while 114 voted against it.
The Road Ahead
Located within Morgan County—a traditionally dry area—Falkville is now aligning with many of its neighbors, including Decatur, Hartselle, Priceville, and Trinity, which already permit alcohol sales. Under state law, municipalities have the authority to hold referendums to determine their own status regarding legal alcohol distribution.
There is one final step remaining in the process: the Falkville Town Council must formally pass an ordinance outlining the specific rules and regulations for local alcohol sales. That draft is expected to be prepared for the Town Council meeting scheduled for July.
