Missouri-based steel producer acquires Alabama company

A major shift is coming to the regional steel industry as a Missouri-based powerhouse has officially announced its acquisition of a long-standing Alabama institution. Bull Moose Tube Co. is set to acquire the Hoover-headquartered Hanna Steel Corp. for an undisclosed sum.

Expanding the footprint

This strategic move is expected to close in the third quarter of this year. Once the deal is finalized, Hanna Steel will operate as a division of Bull Moose, a well-known manufacturer specializing in steel pipe and tubing products. The acquisition brings significant assets under the Bull Moose umbrella, including a coil-coating facility in Fairfield, a tubing operation in Tuscaloosa, additional tubing facilities in Pekin, Illinois, and the Hanna Truck Line (HTL).

A legacy of Alabama manufacturing

Hanna Steel holds a storied place in Alabama's industrial history. Founded by Gen. Walter J. Hanna in 1954, the company originally cut its teeth producing road signs for the state before evolving into the steel production giant it is today. Pete Hanna, the founder's son and a cornerstone of the business for over 60 years, passed away last year at the age of 88.

Industry outlook

Bull Moose, established in 1962 and currently a part of the Caparo organization, operates seven manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and services diverse industries, from commercial construction to fire protection. Chicago-based investment bank Brown Gibbons Lang & Company provided financial advisory services for the transaction.

John Krupinski, CEO of Bull Moose, views the addition of Hanna Steel as a natural evolution. “Hanna adds complementary assets, experienced teams, a respected reputation and culture, along with a product portfolio that supports our long-term growth strategy,” Krupinski stated.

Jill Cunningham, vice-chair of Hanna Steel, echoed that sentiment, noting that the partnership provides an opportunity to blend their commitment to customer service with the scale of Bull Moose. “We are proud of the legacy we’ve built and look forward to the future of Hanna under Bull Moose’s stewardship,” Cunningham said.
