Largest power transformer manufacturer in North America building new Alabama plant

North America’s largest power transformer manufacturer is heading to Alabama. Virginia Transformer, headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, has officially announced plans to construct a massive 600,000-square-foot production facility in Muscle Shoals, a move that promises to bring 1,100 new jobs to the region.
A Major Investment in the Shoals
The new plant will be situated on a 90-acre site within the Shoals Research Airpark in Colbert County. Construction on the project is already underway, with the company aiming to kick off production by January 2028. To keep operations running smoothly, the site will utilize a dedicated Norfolk Southern rail spur to handle logistics and supply chain needs.
This location will become the company’s seventh manufacturing hub, capable of producing a wide array of power transformers ranging from two Megavolt-Amperes (MVA) up to 500 MVA. These units are critical for supporting data centers, renewable energy projects, utilities, and various industrial markets across North America.
Why Alabama?
The project secured its footing in Alabama after state officials pushed for the deal over competing bids from other states. Governor Kay Ivey noted that the Shoals area is evolving beyond its musical roots, proving itself as a powerhouse for industrial manufacturing. Earlier this month, Gov. Ivey announced that the park would receive $4.5 million in support through the Growing Alabama Tax Credit program to assist with public infrastructure and site development.
"Alabama is proud to offer the right combination of infrastructure, capable workforce and community partners to make Virginia Transformer’s expansion a success," said Alabama Commerce Sec. Ellen McNair.
Looking Ahead
Virginia Transformer CEO Prabhat Jain described the Muscle Shoals site as a key component of the company's broader growth strategy. The expansion arrives alongside development at the company’s existing facility in Rincon, Georgia. As reported by 205focus.com, the project underscores the firm's continued confidence in its workforce and the increasing demand from its North American customer base.
