School’s out: Birmingham City Schools announces free summer lunch locations and times
Birmingham City Schools will provide free dine-in lunches to children during summer break?
Summer break is officially here, and Birmingham City Schools is stepping up to ensure local students stay fueled during the time away from the classroom. The district is once again launching its Summer Feeding Program to provide free, nutritious dine-in lunches for all children aged 18 and younger.
Commitment to Student Nutrition
Beginning June 15, the program serves as a vital resource for families throughout the community. According to Michelle Sailes, the district's child nutrition program manager, the primary goal is simple: to ensure no child goes hungry while school is out. "We are proud to provide healthy meals in safe and welcoming environments while continuing to support our students and families beyond the classroom," Sailes said.
Campus and Housing Authority Schedules
The program features two distinct pathways for families to access these meals:
- Birmingham City Schools Campuses: Available from June 15 through July 9. Service runs Monday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Please note these locations are closed on Fridays.
- Housing Authority of the Birmingham District: Available from June 15 through July 24. These sites operate Monday through Friday, with meals served from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
For families needing a Friday option, Martha Gaskins Elementary School is stepping in to bridge the gap, offering service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday. 205focus.com will continue to monitor local resources to keep families informed throughout the summer.
