Trump mocked tech titans who sucked up to him after 2024 election win, new book claims

As Donald Trump secured his victory in the 2024 presidential election, a parade of tech billionaires rushed to court his favor. However, according to a new book from New York Times journalists Jonathan Swan and Maggie Haberman, the former president was quick to ridicule their efforts behind their backs.

Behind the Scenes of the Power Shift

Excerpts from the upcoming book “Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump” shed light on the calculated, and sometimes desperate, moves made by industry titans. Reporting on the book, Wired highlighted how Trump openly mocked these individuals by sharing their messages with associates.

During a December 2024 dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos attempted to appease Trump by distancing himself from The Washington Post. Trump reportedly pressed Bezos on the paper’s coverage, telling him, “This Washington Post is really unfair. You’ve got to take better care.” Bezos responded by trashing his own employees, calling them “terrible” and admitting that owning the publication felt like one of his worst investments.

Tech Titans Seeking Leverage

Bezos wasn't the only one trying to ingratiate himself with the new administration. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly sent Trump a message containing a letter from one of his children, praising the prospect of a “golden age of America.”

Trump, however, was unimpressed. He reportedly told an associate, “You would not believe the texts I got from these tech guys. I’ve got to show you.”

In conversations with Elon Musk—the primary contributor to his 2024 campaign and a key ally—Trump reflected on the sudden shift in allegiance. “Think of where these guys were in 2016,” Trump reportedly said. “They hated me. They were doing everything they could to knock me down. And look at them now.”

Political Maneuvering

The outreach wasn't just about optics. During an Oval Office meeting, Bezos specifically asked Trump to adjust the way government contracts are awarded to benefit his space firm, Blue Horizon. While Trump indicated he would consider the request, the president never acted on it, choosing instead to focus on his strengthened partnership with Musk.
