McDonald’s is making a major change to drive-thrus: What’s changing?
The company said the technology will free up employees to spend more time engaging with customers.
McDonald’s is making a fresh push into artificial intelligence for its drive-thrus. After stepping back from a previous AI initiative in 2024 following widespread customer complaints regarding order errors, the fast-food giant is launching a new system called ArchIQ.
Meet Archy: The New Face of the Drive-Thru
As part of the company's new McDonald’s Next strategy, the chain has introduced an AI assistant nicknamed "Archy." According to Restaurant Business, five locations are currently testing the technology, which aims to streamline kitchen operations and reduce the overall workload for store staff.
The company emphasizes that this automation is intended to free up crew members, allowing them more time to interact with customers. CEO Chris Kempczinski noted that as the customer journey becomes more automated, the importance of human hospitality grows. "With fewer interactions, the bar for hospitality that makes people feel seen, welcomed, and valued only goes up," Kempczinski stated.
A Return to Founding Principles
Announced on June 1, the McDonald’s Next initiative marks a commitment to founder Ray Kroc’s original vision of serving high-quality food with a smile at a fair value. Amidst stiff competition and the pressures of inflation, Kempczinski believes the company must rededicate itself to this promise, ensuring customers do not have to choose between convenience and quality.
"In a world where every restaurant is a swipe away, there is no such thing as second place," the CEO remarked. While headquarters has outlined this unified direction, individual markets will have the flexibility to determine how they execute the strategy locally.
This strategic pivot arrives alongside a series of leadership changes within the organization earlier in 2026, including the appointments of Mustafa Husain as U.S. chief information officer, Skye Anderson as U.S. chief operating officer, and Mattijs Backx as chief transformation and services officer.
