No human remains found during weeks of excavation by Pell City police in Talladega County

After weeks of intensive searching, the Pell City Police Department confirmed on Friday that no human remains were recovered during a high-profile excavation in Talladega County.

A Search Driven by Credible Evidence

The operation, which began on July 8 at a remote site off Wolf Pond Road, had captured significant public attention. Pell City Police Chief Justin Cooper stated that the decision to excavate was not taken lightly; it was the result of a long-standing criminal investigation and a tip deemed too credible to ignore.

"Given the totality of the information, it was a lead that could not be ignored," Cooper explained. Investigators were guided by multiple witness accounts, recurring alerts from cadaver dogs, and site characteristics that aligned with details gathered throughout their probe.

Maintaining Integrity and Compassion

Throughout the excavation, authorities were notably quiet about the details of the search. Chief Cooper noted that the department intentionally limited the release of information to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and to avoid causing undue anguish to families of missing persons.

"Our priority was to follow the evidence, protect the integrity of the investigation, and avoid causing unnecessary distress to families until the facts could be fully examined," said Cooper. While the team did not find the outcome they had sought, the Chief reiterated the department's unwavering commitment to missing persons cases, stating, "We remain dedicated to following the evidence wherever it leads, because no missing person is ever forgotten."

A Collaborative Effort

The operation was a massive undertaking that drew on regional and federal resources. Chief Cooper extended his gratitude to the various agencies involved, including the Lincoln Police Department, the District Attorneys' offices of St. Clair and Talladega counties, the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics, the FBI, and the Pell City Street Department.

Reflecting on the collaborative effort, Cooper added, "The teamwork and professionalism displayed by everyone involved were exceptional and represent public service at its best."
