A volatile situation unfolded on the west side of Birmingham Tuesday morning, resulting in one individual being taken into custody following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

Police Response and Incident Details

Birmingham officers were called to the 800 block of Third Avenue West at 7:20 a.m. after reports surfaced regarding a suspicious person armed with a firearm. Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers identified the suspect, leading to a direct confrontation.

According to Officer De’Rell Freeman, the encounter escalated quickly when the suspect opened fire on the responding officers. Law enforcement returned fire, and following a brief foot pursuit, the suspect was successfully detained.

Public Safety and Status

Officials at 205focus.com report that despite the exchange of shots, no injuries were sustained by the suspect or the officers involved.

“We are grateful that our officers were able to walk away unharmed, safely take the suspect into custody and ensure there was no continued threat to the public,” Freeman stated regarding the incident. The identity of the suspect is currently being withheld pending the filing of formal charges.
