‘They were precious children’: Alabama mom grief-stricken over drownings during family swim outing
King Scott, 12, and Lola Scott, 10, both students at Tarrant Intermediate School, died at Children’s of Alabama hospital Birmingham Saturday night after they were pulled from the water at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve.
A grieving Alabama mother is mourning the tragic loss of two of her children following a harrowing incident during a family outing this past weekend.
A Tragic Afternoon at Turkey Creek
King Scott, 12, and 10-year-old Lola Scott—both students at Tarrant Intermediate School—passed away Saturday night at Children’s of Alabama hospital in Birmingham. The siblings were pulled from the water at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve after a swim turned into an unthinkable emergency.
Their mother, Lolisa Hood, shared the heartbreaking details of the day. The family had initially hoped to visit a local water park, but after finding splash pads closed, they decided on the creek. Hood stated she made sure the children reviewed the posted safety rules upon arrival, and for a time, they played safely in a knee-deep area of the water.
The Attempted Rescue
As the family prepared to leave, three of her children—Lola, King, and 14-year-old Brian—inadvertently wandered into a section of the creek reaching depths of 8 to 9 feet. When Brian began calling for help, the situation turned dire. Hood managed to pull Brian to safety, but she was unable to reach Lola and King as they struggled in the deeper water. Recounting the final moments, Hood described King’s selfless attempt to push his sister toward the bank before both children went under.
Desperate to save them, Hood sought help from bystanders and passersby. A woman walking nearby and later four men from a passing truck jumped into the water to assist in the search. First responders from Palmerdale, Center Point, and Glenwood fire departments, alongside Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies, arrived on the scene and initiated CPR.
Remembering Lola and King
Despite the efforts to save them, the children tragically succumbed to their injuries. Hood remained by their side throughout the night, describing them as the kindest, sweetest children with bright futures ahead. Lola, a straight-A student, was an active member of Girls on the Run and dreamed of becoming a teacher. King, described by his mother as a born protector, loved neighborhood football and playing Roblox.
"They were precious children," Hood said. "My kids had plans."
