1 of 4 Alabama county jail escapees recaptured in Midfield in stolen vehicle
Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. was taken into custody Sunday afternoon in Midfield. Officers about 4:30 p.m. were alerted by the Flock camera system that a stolen vehicle had been detected in the 600 block of Bessemer Super Highway.
One of the four inmates who escaped from the Perry County Correctional Prep Center has been taken back into custody. Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr. was apprehended in Midfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Arrest
The Midfield Police Department tracked Bush down after a Flock camera system alerted officers to a stolen vehicle in the 600 block of Bessemer Super Highway at approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The car, a 2012 Acura, had been reported stolen out of Selma on Saturday. Officers positively identified the driver as Bush, one of the four individuals who fled the jail earlier that weekend.
Bush is currently facing a charge of receiving stolen property and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail while awaiting extradition to Perry County. Midfield Police Chief Michael Jeffries praised the role of modern technology in the capture. "This demonstrates the value of modern technology and proactive policing efforts," Jeffries stated. "The Flock System continues to be an effective tool in helping our officers apprehend perpetrators and enhance public safety. We are proud of the professionalism displayed by our officers and our partnership with our law enforcement partners."
Details of the Escape
Bush was one of four inmates—along with Marquavious Billingsley, Jaden Maxwell, and Kevin Gunn—who escaped from the Perry County facility around 1 a.m. Saturday. All four were housed at the center under an agreement with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum confirmed that the breakout was a calculated effort, involving a fake medical emergency, a getaway driver, and external assistance. According to the Sheriff, the group orchestrated a medical distraction within one of the pods. When two detention officers followed protocol and entered the cell, the inmates forced their way past them and scaled three separate fences to escape. The entire incident was captured on surveillance footage, and the group's getaway driver has already been arrested.
