North Alabama gets additional healthcare option with opening of new Huntsville clinic
Huntsville Hospital representatives say they've been eyeing the area for a long time
North Alabama residents have a new resource for their medical needs. Huntsville Hospital has officially expanded its footprint in the region, celebrating the opening of a new primary care clinic designed to bolster health services in the north Huntsville area.
A Strategic Partnership
In a move described by representatives as a long-awaited goal, Huntsville Hospital teamed up with Alabama A&M University to establish Physicians Care north Huntsville. Located within just a half-mile of the university campus, the 3,200-square-foot facility held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony this past Tuesday.
While the hospital system initially weighed the possibility of opening an urgent care location, leadership ultimately shifted the focus toward primary care. Huntsville Hospital President Tracy Doughty emphasized that the facility serves as a vital new entry point for the community to address health concerns early.
"Every patient who establishes here as a primary care patient, every screening completed, every health concern addressed earlier, is why we’re here today," Doughty said during the ceremony. "We all know that health care disparities exist, and this is one way we’re trying to address them in our community. This place represents better access, better health, and a stronger North Huntsville."
Serving the Community
The project was a labor of love for the hospital team, which navigated years of planning and regulatory processes to bring the vision to life. Dwayne Mathis, executive director of the Huntsville Hospital Physicians Network, noted that the effort was bolstered by the strong collaboration with Alabama A&M.
"There’s a lot of red tape, a lot of different things that you have to do to open any clinic or any facility of this magnitude here in the city, but it was well worth it," Mathis said. "My team does a fantastic job pulling resources together, hiring the right staff, great partnership with Alabama, and strong partnerships, and this is the result of it."
The facility is now ready to serve patients, featuring five exam rooms and one dedicated procedure room. The clinic will be under the leadership of Tammy Smith, PA, a proud alumna of Alabama A&M University, ensuring that the new healthcare option is managed by someone with deep roots in the local community.
