Severe weather risk increases for part of Alabama on Sunday

Severe weather chances are on the rise across Alabama this Sunday afternoon. According to the latest reports from 205focus.com, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center has officially upgraded portions of north and east Alabama to a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe storms, which remains in effect through this evening.

What to Expect

The National Weather Service warns that the most intense storms could bring heavy rainfall and damaging winds reaching up to 60 mph. While the threat includes scattered severe activity, the good news is that hail and tornadoes are not currently expected.

A Level 2 risk indicates that scattered severe storms are possible, while the remainder of north Alabama and parts of north and east central Alabama are under a Level 1 risk, meaning isolated severe storms are possible. Outside of these areas, organized severe weather is not anticipated.

Timing and Conditions

Forecasters are tracking storms moving in from the northwest ahead of an approaching cold front. The window of concern for the strongest storms is from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Expect a hot and humid Sunday ahead of the storms. Temperatures across the state are projected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, with high humidity making it feel even warmer.

Looking Ahead

Rain is expected to be a factor for several days. Through 7 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service anticipates heavy rainfall, particularly in south, central, and west Alabama. Areas located between the Interstate 20 and 65 corridors could see totals of 2 inches or more.

While rain remains in the forecast throughout the upcoming week, the National Weather Service notes that no additional severe weather is currently expected in Alabama after today.
