Siblings die after being pulled from in Turkey Creek in east Jefferson County
A 911 caller reported two children were washed away by the water.
A tragic incident unfolded in eastern Jefferson County on Saturday, resulting in the death of two siblings after they were pulled from Turkey Creek. Emergency crews were dispatched to the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve on Turkey Creek Road around 4 p.m. following reports of a potential drowning.
Search and Rescue Efforts
According to the initial 911 report, the children—a boy and a girl—had been swept away near the falls. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Henry Irby stated that the pair was with their mother near the bank when they slipped under the water and failed to resurface.
A search operation was initiated immediately. Bystanders eventually managed to pull the children from the water, and CPR was performed at the scene before they were rushed to the hospital around 5 p.m. Despite the efforts of first responders, including the Palmerdale Fire and Rescue, Center Point Fire and Rescue, and Glenwood Fire and Rescue, both children were later pronounced dead at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham.
Ongoing Investigation
The identities of the children have not yet been released. Authorities with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy.
