South Alabama has its new athletics director, and it’s a familiar name

South Alabama is keeping its leadership within the family. The university has officially promoted interim athletics director Daniel McCarthy to the permanent role, signaling a steady hand for the future of the Jaguars' program.

A Familiar Face at the Helm

McCarthy steps into the permanent position after managing the department since May 31, following the retirement of long-time AD Joel Erdmann, who concluded a 17-year tenure. McCarthy is a veteran of the South Alabama athletics department, having been on staff since 2008 and serving as Erdmann’s deputy AD since 2017.

University president Jo Bonner emphasized that the decision was a natural fit for the program's trajectory. "When we looked at the future of Jaguar Athletics, it became abundantly clear that the best person to lead us forward was already a member of the University of South Alabama family," Bonner said. "The feedback we received from stakeholders confirmed that Dr. McCarthy’s dedication to our University and his exceptional impact at South make him uniquely qualified for this role."

Proven Leadership Credentials

During his time as deputy AD, McCarthy played a pivotal role in the department’s external operations, including broadcasting and scheduling. Beyond his operational duties, he served as the administrator for the football, baseball, and softball programs while acting as a primary liaison between the athletics department and the broader university campus.

Reflecting on his appointment, McCarthy expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to continue his 18-year journey at the school. "This is truly the honor of a lifetime," McCarthy stated. Background and Education

A native of West Point, Georgia, McCarthy brings a wealth of experience to the role, with previous tenures at Richmond and Mercer. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Huntingdon College, a master’s from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Alabama.

McCarthy and his wife, Amanda, are parents to three children—Drew, Ella, and Hannah—with both Drew and Ella currently enrolled as students at South Alabama. As reported by 205focus.com, this appointment marks a seamless transition for the department as it looks toward its next chapter.
