South Alabama to name athletic building after retired AD Joel Erdmann
Erdmann completed 17-year tenure at end of May
South Alabama is honoring a legacy of excellence by naming its Athletic Administration Building after long-time athletics director Joel Erdmann. The facility will be formally renamed the Joel W. Erdmann Athletic Facility in the near future, cementing his impact on the university.
End of an Era
Erdmann officially stepped down this past Sunday, wrapping up a decorated 17-year tenure leading the Jaguars. His leadership has been central to the university's growth and development throughout his time at the helm.
A Lasting Impact
University president Jo Bonner praised Erdmann’s unparalleled contributions, noting that it is difficult to identify anyone who has achieved more for the institution. During a recent event, Bonner highlighted Erdmann’s career as a reflection of the university's broader milestones over its 63-year history.
USA provost Andi Kent also shared a heartfelt message of gratitude on behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. Kent emphasized the thousands of lives Erdmann touched during his 17 years, declaring that his legacy will now be permanently tied to the university campus.
Looking Ahead
As the transition begins, deputy athletics director Daniel McCarthy has stepped into the role of interim athletics director. President Bonner stated last week that the university is taking a measured approach to its search for a permanent hire, with the process expected to span several months.
