Tommy Tuberville blames ‘residency hoax’ on Doug Jones being taken over by ‘Marxist mind virus’
Tuberville said a claim that he had not lived in Alabama for seven years was a “witch hunt” created by Democrats and the media.
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville is ready to shift his focus entirely to the November general election after putting a major challenge to his gubernatorial eligibility to rest. Tuberville expressed relief that the Alabama GOP has officially cleared his path to the ballot, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown against Democratic opponent Doug Jones.
Putting the Residency Challenge to Bed
The state GOP officially discarded the challenge to Tuberville’s nomination on Sunday. Chairman Scott Stadthagen confirmed the decision, noting that the candidate successfully demonstrated he has met the necessary residency requirements to run for governor. Tuberville, in a statement released following the committee’s ruling, labeled the controversy a "ridiculous residency hoax."
"I’m thankful for the Committee holding a hearing today to finally put this ridiculous residency hoax to bed," Tuberville said. "When I’m not in D.C., Suzanne and I are at home in Auburn and yes, sometimes, at our beach house on the coast. This entire witch hunt could have been avoided if the media and Democrats had just asked a few of our neighbors about this, but they don’t care about the truth."
To settle the matter, Tuberville provided documentation and tax returns verifying his move to his Auburn residence in 2018. The records show he began paying state taxes that same year and subsequently registered to vote in Alabama in 2019.
Gearing Up for the General Election
With the residency issue settled, Tuberville is turning his sights toward his opponent. The upcoming November ballot will feature a rematch between the senator and his predecessor, Doug Jones, who served in the U.S. Senate after his 2017 election. Tuberville famously defeated Jones to claim that seat in 2020.
Tuberville did not hold back in his assessment of Jones’ political evolution. "In 2020, I ran against a liberal Doug Jones, but he has since fallen deep into the socialist, Marxist mind virus taking over half of our country," Tuberville asserted, calling for a series of debates on the issues.
The Republican nominee made it clear he intends to campaign on a contrast of visions. Tuberville highlighted a range of topics he wants to challenge Jones on, including his stance on border security, police funding, and merit-based hiring practices. "Let’s hear Doug talk about men competing in women’s sports, DEI instead of merit-based hiring, child mutilation in the name of ‘transgenderism’, expanded welfare instead of workforce training, or open borders and defunding the police - which he has consistently supported - putting Alabama families at risk. Alabama’s streets need to be safe," Tuberville added.
