Alabama baseball dismantles Alabama State to begin Tuscaloosa Regional

Friday proved to be a chaotic day for many NCAA baseball tournament regional hosts, with several high seeds falling in their openers. From top-seeded UCLA dropping a decision to Saint Mary’s to Auburn falling to Milwaukee and Southern Miss losing to Little Rock, the postseason atmosphere was volatile. Even in the Tuscaloosa Regional, South Carolina-Upstate pulled off an upset against Oklahoma State.

However, Alabama avoided the trend entirely. When the Crimson Tide finally took the field against Alabama State in the tournament's late game, they delivered a dominant 21-3 performance to kick off their regional campaign.

A Focused Effort

"I thought our guys were hooked in from the jump," Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn said. "I’ve been challenging them all week to make sure they were focused and hooked in and not looking ahead."

The offense set the tone immediately. In the bottom of the first, Bryce Fowler crushed a 1-0 pitch for a triple, eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Justin Lebron to give the Tide an early 1-0 lead. Luke Vaughn then extended that cushion in the second with a two-run shot over the left-field wall into Second Ave.

Breaking the Game Open

Despite Alabama State narrowing the gap to 3-2 after a Miguel Orope home run in the third, the Crimson Tide response was clinical. Alabama piled on runs in the fourth and fifth innings, taking advantage of ASU pitching and defensive miscues to balloon their lead to 9-2.

The blowout continued in the fifth when Alabama's top MLB prospect, Justin Lebron, launched a towering home run into the left-field parking lot, putting the Tide up by 10 runs. By the time the sixth inning arrived, the game was well out of reach, as Alabama scored six runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI blast from Fowler and a solo shot from Brady Neal.

On the mound, Tyler Fay earned the victory, limiting the Hornets to six hits while striking out eight batters over 5.2 innings of work. Tate Robertson ultimately closed out the final frames to secure the win.

Moving Forward

Alabama State head coach Jose Vazquez admitted his squad struggled under the pressure, noting, "We just have to be better. I feel that even though they played good baseball, I feel that we kind of beat ourselves."

With the win, Alabama advances to face South Carolina-Upstate on Saturday. Meanwhile, Alabama State must fight to stay alive in an elimination matchup against Oklahoma State.
