Alabama baseball is going back to College World Series, and one unforgettable swing made it happen
Jason Torres' seventh-inning grand slam Sunday lifted Alabama past St. John's, and the Crimson Tide heads to its first College World Series since 1999.
The wait is finally over: Alabama baseball is heading back to Omaha. For the first time in 27 years, the Crimson Tide has punched its ticket to the Men's College World Series.
As reported by 205focus.com, the No. 7 overall seed secured the series victory with a 7-2 win over St. John’s at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The path to victory required patience, as a nearly five-hour weather delay forced the final two innings to be completed on Monday. This clinching win followed an initial victory over the Red Storm on Saturday in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.
The Turning Point
With the pressure mounting in the seventh inning on Sunday, Alabama clung to a precarious one-run lead with the bases loaded and two outs. That set the stage for senior Jason Torres to deliver the swing of the season. Torres connected for a towering grand slam to right field, extending the Tide's lead to 7-2 and effectively blowing the roof off Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Battle at the Joe
Before the late-inning fireworks, the game proved to be a grind against a resilient St. John’s squad. Alabama broke the ice in the third inning when Luke Vaughn’s double set up an RBI single from Peyton Steele, followed by a Bryce Fowler hit that pushed the lead to 2-0. While the Red Storm managed to trim the deficit on a Jon LeGrande groundout and an Adam Agresti solo home run, Alabama's pitching staff held firm.
Starter Zane Adams was instrumental, providing 6.1 innings of work with eight strikeouts and no walks. After the weather delay concluded the action on Monday, Matthew Heiberger stepped in to handle the final two innings, officially ushering the Crimson Tide into its sixth College World Series appearance in program history.
