Army gets lighter Javelin launchers

The U.S. Army is officially boosting its defensive capabilities with the arrival of next-generation Javelin launchers. In a joint statement released on Tuesday, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin confirmed that they have officially delivered the first units of these upgraded systems.

Cutting Weight, Increasing Performance

The new Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLUs) offer significant improvements over previous models. Developed by the Javelin Joint Venture—a specialized partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin—these launchers are 30% lighter and 25% smaller than their predecessors. According to the companies, the units are compatible with past, current, and future Javelin variants and provide soldiers with double the target detection and recognition range.

As the Javelin system is an anti-tank guided munition designed for individual carry, these reductions in size and weight are set to drastically improve portability in the field. Defense News reports that the system remains versatile enough to be fired from the shoulder or mounted on vehicles, serving as a critical asset against strongholds and armored threats—a capability that has already proven vital in Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Modernizing the Arsenal

Industry leaders are hailing the delivery as a major win for mission success. Lockheed’s Javelin program director, Rich Liccion, noted that the innovative design improves both mobility and survivability without sacrificing the precision firepower soldiers expect. Jenna Hunt Frazier, Raytheon’s Javelin program director, added that the delivery underscores a commitment to advancing technology for service members while ensuring these tools reach the front lines faster.

This milestone is a key part of the Army's ongoing modernization push. The project follows a series of significant investment milestones, including $267 million in contracts awarded during 2024, as tracked by Executive Biz.
