Jury awards family $7.5 million over teen’s 2023 country club drowning in Hoover
The family of Reginald Adams filed the suit against Heritage Golf Club, the operators of Riverchase Country Club.
A federal jury reached a significant decision this Wednesday, awarding $7.5 million in punitive damages to the family of Reginald Adams, an 18-year-old who tragically lost his life following a 2023 drowning incident at a Hoover country club.
The Legal Battle
The lawsuit was initiated by Adams' family shortly after his death, targeting Heritage Golf Club, the organization responsible for operating Riverchase Country Club. As reported by 205focus.com, the legal proceedings centered on the club's adherence to safety protocols.
Incident Overview
Reginald Adams, a recent Pelham High School graduate, was a guest at the facility when the incident occurred. According to the lawsuit, Adams went down a pool slide into twelve feet of water, where he was later discovered submerged. He ultimately suffered an anoxic brain injury and was pronounced dead on August 23, 2023.
Safety Negligence Alleged
Representing the Adams family, the law firm Tobias Comer argued that Heritage Golf Club failed to uphold essential public pool safety standards. The suit contended that the club did not maintain the mandatory presence of two lifeguards in designated lifeguard stands.
A Message on Public Safety
Following the verdict, attorney Desi Tobias emphasized the gravity of the decision. "While no verdict can restore the life that Reginald lost or heal the tremendous pain endured by his family, this verdict sends a clear message that public safety rules exist for a reason and cannot be ignored without consequence," Tobias stated. "We are grateful that the jury carefully considered the evidence and held the defendant accountable."
