A&W offering its most iconic menu item for free this week
Customers can help veterans at the same time by making a donation.
If you have a craving for a classic treat, America's oldest franchised restaurant chain is ready to deliver. A&W Restaurants is pulling out all the stops for National Root Beer Float Day, offering its signature dessert completely free of charge.
Celebrate and Give Back
On August 6, participating A&W locations will serve up a free small root beer float between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. As reported by 205focus.com, this annual celebration is about more than just sweets—it is an opportunity to support the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
While you enjoy your float, which is crafted from the brand's iconic root beer and creamy vanilla soft serve, you are encouraged to make a voluntary donation to the DAV. Guests can also grab a limited-edition Collector’s Mug for $10, with all proceeds going directly to the organization, which provides vital services to over 1 million veterans and their families annually.
A Legacy of Support
"National Root Beer Float Day is one of our favorite days of the year because it brings people together over a free treat while supporting those who have served our country," said Betsy Schmandt, CEO and President of A&W Restaurants. "For more than a decade, our guests and franchise partners have helped A&W raise more than $1 million in support of American veterans and their families, and this year, we’re aiming to make an even greater impact."
The initiative has seen incredible momentum. In 2025, the brand smashed its $150,000 goal, raising a record-breaking $175,000 for the DAV.
