Birmingham Pride Parade draws protesters ‘trying to provoke people’
Central Alabama Pride Festival & Parade kicks off 8 p.m. at 32nd Street S and 7th Avenue.
The annual Birmingham Pride festivities are underway, but the celebration has drawn a small contingent of protesters to the area. Social media reports indicate that individuals have been stationed near the event site with the intent to provoke attendees.
Parade Kickoff and Presence
The Central Alabama Pride Festival & Parade officially commenced at 8 p.m., centered at 32nd Street S and 7th Avenue.
Recent reports from the Birmingham subreddit highlight the presence of protesters at the intersection of 29th Street S and 7th Avenue S. User URA_qwerty shared images of individuals holding signs with religious messages, such as "The kingdom of God is at hand, Repent and believe the gospel" and "Turn to Jesus," while allegedly recording participants with a Go Pro camera.
Community Reaction
The community has responded with both defense and dismissiveness. One popular comment on the subreddit thread questioned the motivation behind the protest, asking why individuals would choose to spend their time disrupting a celebration of life. Others, such as user moon_haven 77, offered words of encouragement to those participating in the march, stating, "I’ll be marching in the parade with my church and several others. you are loved????never forget that!!"
Organizational Response
Josh Coleman, president of Central Alabama Pride, noted that while a small number of people have protested the event—which has been a local tradition for nearly 50 years—the organization remains undeterred.
"Our focus remains exactly where it has always been: creating a safe, welcoming, and joyful celebration for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies," Coleman said in an email statement to 205focus.com. "We fully expect tonight’s event to be a positive and successful celebration, and we encourage attendees to focus on the spirit of Pride rather than those attempting to distract from it."
