Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ‘just getting going, man,’ cites Alabama’s Nick Saban

Dabo Swinney is shutting down any talk of his tenure at Clemson winding down. In a recent, wide-ranging interview with On3, the head coach made it clear that he is fully committed to his post and believes his best years are ahead of him.

Just Getting Started

Swinney dismissed any speculation regarding his future with the Tigers. "Hell no. I mean, I’m just getting going," Swinney told On3. He pointed to the career arc of Alabama legend Nick Saban as his benchmark, noting, "I’m right about the same age Nick was when he got to Alabama. So I’m just getting going, man. I love a challenge, and again, all we’ve done is win."

Addressing Recent Trends

While Swinney highlights his trophy case, the conversation also touched on the reality that the program has faced headwinds recently. After a dominant stretch from 2015 to 2019 that featured two national championships and two additional title game appearances, the program has missed preseason expectations every year since 2021. As reported by On3, Clemson has lost at least four games in each of the past three seasons, a stark contrast to the 2015-2020 era where they never suffered more than two losses in a single season.

Championship Pedigree

Swinney remains unfazed by outside criticism, emphasizing his proven track record of success. "I’ve got 11 championships. The next closest is Kirby Smart, who’s got six," Swinney said. "I’ve got seven playoff appearances. There ain’t another coach still coaching with seven playoff appearances."

The coach noted that the noise from the media doesn't reflect the internal reality at Clemson. He specifically dismissed critics, stating, "It ain’t about what ESPN thinketh. It ain’t about what Paul Finebaum sayeth. It’s about what you see. That’s the only thing that ever matters."

Despite coming off his program's worst season since 2010, Swinney is projecting unwavering confidence. "What I do know is that we’re taking Clemson back to the top," he said, reminding fans of his early days in 2009 when his championship proclamations were met with skepticism. "People are happy here, and we ain’t close to being finished."
