Democrat says Trump investigating him, wife ‘because I’m considering running for president’

California Governor Gavin Newsom claimed on Monday that federal agents are actively targeting him and his wife, Jennifer Seibel Newsom, under direct orders from President Donald Trump. The governor, a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, alleges the investigation is a calculated act of retaliation for his political ambitions and his vocal criticism of the administration.

Allegations of Abuse

In a televised speech, Newsom stated that federal agents have been contacting family friends and former employees, describing the process as a desperate search for a crime rather than a legitimate inquiry. He accused the administration of abusing the grand jury process by scrutinizing years of documentation to build a case against him.

"Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets. He’s coming after me because I’m considering running for president," Newsom asserted. He highlighted the appointment of Trump’s personal attorney, Todd Blanche, as assistant attorney general—and current nominee for permanent attorney general—as evidence of the administration’s focus on targeting political opponents.

Escalating Tensions

Newsom noted that the pressure has recently shifted to his wife, describing her as an innocent target of a personal vendetta. "If they can’t intimidate me, they’ll go after the mother of our children. Donald Trump hit the wrong target. We have nothing to hide," the governor said.

The California leader further condemned the administration's alleged corruption, pointing to accusations involving tariff relief, presidential personal business ventures, and the acceptance of a $400 million jet from Qatar. He challenged federal investigators to look toward the White House instead, stating, "Donald Trump is selling the presidency."

Defiant Stance

During his remarks, Newsom delivered a pointed message to the White House. "You can subpoena my records, you can investigate me, you can harass me. Put my name on any and every enemies list you have. But leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta."

While addressing the ongoing investigation, the governor insisted he would not be deterred. Recalling the president’s previous calls for his arrest, Newsom framed the situation as a fight against systemic lawlessness. "Mr. President, come after me. I’m not going anywhere," he declared. "And the country is watching."
