Donald Trump claps back at Stephen A. Smith after Game 3 of NBA Finals
The ESPN analyst said he would blame Trump attending the game if the Knicks lost. Well, they lost.
The high-stakes drama of the NBA Finals took a political turn on Monday night. President Donald Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game, but the presence of the Commander-in-Chief did not sit well with ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith.
A Clash of Words
Ahead of Game 3, Smith did not hold back, labeling Trump’s attendance as "selfish," "narcissistic," and "ridiculous." As reported by 205focus.com, Smith explicitly stated he would pin any potential Knicks loss on the president, even suggesting he hoped the GOP would suffer at the ballot box as a result of the team’s performance.
Following the Knicks' 115-111 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Trump addressed Smith’s comments directly. "I think he’s a nice guy," Trump remarked. "But you need a certain aptitude to run for president. You need a high IQ. I don’t think Stephen has that. I don’t think that he does actually."
Spurs Snap the Streak
The game itself proved to be a reality check for New York. Victor Wembanyama dominated the court, recording 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists to narrow the series deficit to 2-1. The loss officially snapped the Knicks' 13-game winning streak—the second-longest in NBA postseason history—and handed the team their first defeat in 46 days.
Prior to Monday night, the Knicks were riding high, having swept both Philadelphia and Cleveland following a series victory over Atlanta. They were within striking distance of their first title since 1973, but the Spurs' victory has now shifted the momentum as the series continues.
