Educator and veteran vie to fill Huntsville school board seat

South Huntsville voters will head to the polls on Aug. 25 for the Huntsville municipal election, where the race for the District Three school board seat is heating up. Educator Robert “Coach P” Person and U.S. Army veteran Payten Redfearn are vying for the position to represent south Huntsville schools.

The seat is currently held by Andrea Alvarez, who opted not to seek re-election in order to fight the CHOOSE Act in court.

Candidate Backgrounds

Person brings three decades of education experience to the table. A recently retired teacher, administrator, and coach, he is positioning his campaign around his extensive background in the school system. On the opposing side, Redfearn is a combat veteran and current business executive for global government programs who has three children enrolled in Huntsville City Schools.

Priorities and Vision

When asked about the most pressing needs for the district, both candidates emphasized distinct approaches to student success.

Person aims to focus on academic strength, fiscal responsibility, and transparent planning, ensuring that all growth remains in compliance with DOJ requirements. Redfearn, meanwhile, is pushing for data-driven interventions in math, reading, and science. He advocates for retaining top-tier teachers and holding district leadership accountable for measurable results.

With rapid development impacting the region, managing enrollment is a key point of contention:
