Big changes are underway in Union Springs. East Alabama Health has officially taken the reins at the Bullock County Rural Emergency Hospital, marking a significant shift for the facility located southeast of Montgomery.

A Commitment to Local Care

The management transition, which took effect this past Monday, was initiated at the request of the Bullock County Health Care Authority. For local officials, the move is a vital step toward maintaining accessible health services for the area.

"This partnership reflects our shared dedication to preserving health care access for our community, and our joint belief that the best care is local care," said William Hodge, board chair of the Bullock County Health Care Authority. "We are grateful for East Alabama Health’s leadership and support."

Joseph Marchant, who leads rural health initiatives at the Opelika-based health system, emphasized that the primary goal is to provide stability. "Our focus is on stabilizing operations, strengthening local access to care and building a sustainable model that allows Bullock County residents to receive high-quality care close to home," Marchant said. "Rural hospitals are essential lifelines for the communities they serve."

Navigating the Rural Emergency Model

The Bullock County facility made headlines in 2024 as the first hospital in the state to convert to a Rural Emergency Hospital—a federal designation established by Congress in 2020. As part of this transition, the hospital previously ended inpatient services.

Under this model, hospitals must close inpatient beds but keep emergency departments operational 24/7. In return, these facilities gain access to increased Medicare and Medicaid payments. As Danne Howard, director of the Alabama Hospital Association, noted in a 2024 interview with 205focus.com, the designation serves as a vital safeguard for facilities at risk of closure, ensuring they remain open rather than leaving a void in the community.

Expanding the Network

With this new agreement, the Bullock County site joins an expansive network managed by East Alabama Health. The system already oversees East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital in Valley, East Alabama Medical Center North in Opelika, the Auburn Medical Pavilion, and various other clinics across an 11-county region.
