44-year-old indicted in killing of Birmingham man, unrelated kidnapping, rape of woman

A Birmingham man previously captured during a police standoff has been formally indicted on a string of serious charges, including capital murder and kidnapping. A Jefferson County grand jury handed down the indictments for 44-year-old Christopher James Birl on June 12, with the documents made public this Wednesday.

The Charges

Birl faces multiple felony counts, including capital murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree kidnapping, and theft of property. He has remained in custody at the Jefferson County Jail without bond since his arrest in March 2025, according to reporting by 205focus.com archives.

The Arrest

The suspect's capture occurred on March 16, 2025, when Birmingham’s West Precinct officers responded to a reported burglary on the 800 block of Nassau Avenue S.W. Upon arrival, authorities learned that the intruder was wanted in connection to a homicide. After the department’s Tactical Operations Division secured the home, they discovered a woman who had been held against her will and sexually assaulted. Birl ultimately barricaded himself in the attic before he was taken into custody.

Connection to 2024 Homicide

The capital murder charge stems from the 2024 death of 52-year-old Maurice Turner. Turner was discovered shot to death on the kitchen floor of his College Hills home on June 17, 2024. Investigators were alerted to the scene after a Shot Spotter system detected 10 rounds fired near Eighth Avenue West, though the crime remained unsolved for nearly a year.

Turner’s family has been vocal about the devastating impact of his loss. His sister, DeQuacha Fields, previously described the tragedy as a blur, noting that the family struggled to understand why someone would target their brother. While investigators have not disclosed a specific motive or the evidence linking Birl to the scene, officials had previously released surveillance footage showing an SUV fleeing the area in hopes of generating leads.

As of now, no trial date has been set for Birl in connection with these cases. Turner’s death was a hard hit to the community and those who knew him best.
