ESPN reporter reacts to criticism for bashing Taylor Swift’s Knicks fandom

ESPN reporter Monica McNutt offered an apology on Thursday after her candid comments regarding Taylor Swift’s New York Knicks fandom sparked a stir during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The on-air moment occurred when McNutt, upon spotting the global superstar courtside at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, was caught on camera saying, “get out of here girl.”

Addressing the Swifties

In a video posted by TMZ, McNutt addressed the backlash head-on. “Swifties, I appreciate your passion,” she noted. “I said what I said and here’s the deal, if I’m wrong — and I am wrong apparently because we’ve got an OG Amar’e Stoudemire jersey.” The reference point for the correction was a resurfaced image of Swift sporting an Amar’e Stoudemire jersey while posing alongside Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

McNutt admitted that she simply didn’t have the full context of Swift's history with the team. “I misspoke,” she clarified. “I literally just did a piece on celebrity row, I know these folks. I had not seen her here, this year or last year, and we just saw her with her fiancé (Travis Kelce). Obviously, Travis supports the Cavs, but she didn’t have on any Knicks paraphernalia, so I did not know her Knicks loyalty, but shout out to T-Swift.”

A Historic Night at the Garden

The viral moment took place during a broadcast where McNutt teased Knicks radio voice Tyler Murray for snapping a photo of Swift, to which Murray replied, “It’s for my wife.” McNutt’s playful skepticism followed, but the real story on Wednesday night was the unforgettable comeback orchestrated by the New York Knicks.

Facing a 27-point halftime deficit, the Knicks mounted an epic rally to take down the San Antonio Spurs 107-106. The victory, which brings the franchise to the brink of its first title since 1973, was sealed when OG Anunoby tipped in a Jalen Brunson miss with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

With the 3-1 series lead secured, the Knicks now look to finish the job. Brunson paced the comeback with 36 points, while Anunoby chipped in 33. The two teams are set to face off in Game 5 this Saturday night in San Antonio.
