Family of siblings who drowned in Turkey Creek ‘struggling to cope with unimaginable loss’

The family of two children who tragically drowned at Turkey Creek in Pinson this past weekend is now leaning on the community for support as they navigate an unimaginable loss. King Scott, 12, and Lola Scott, 10, both students at Tarrant Intermediate School, were pulled from the water Saturday afternoon and later pronounced dead at Children’s of Alabama.

A Heartbreaking Afternoon

According to their mother, Lolisa Hood, the family had originally planned to visit a water park, but after those plans fell through, the siblings—who loved the water—requested a trip to the creek. While the children initially remained in a shallow, knee-deep area, they eventually moved toward deeper water. Hood recounted the harrowing moments she witnessed as her children struggled, noting that she was able to save their 14-year-old brother, Brian, but could not reach King and Lola in time. Bystanders and emergency crews, including Palmerdale, Center Point, and Glenwood Fire and Rescue, along with Jefferson County deputies, rushed to the scene to assist, but the siblings could not be saved.

Remembering King and Lola

Reflecting on her children, Hood described Lola as a vibrant 10-year-old who dreamed of becoming a third-grade teacher, while 12-year-old King was remembered as a devoted protector of his family. Kimeshia Hemphill, a co-worker of Hood’s, described the family as being completely devastated by the accident. To assist with funeral expenses and the family's immediate financial needs, two separate GoFundMe accounts have been established. Supporters may also contribute to the effort here.

School Community Support

Tarrant City Schools Superintendent Sherlene McDonald issued a statement expressing profound sadness over the loss. The school district is providing counselors at Tarrant Elementary and Tarrant Intermediate schools to support grieving students and staff. Those wishing to offer personal condolences may drop off cards and letters at the Tarrant Intermediate School office to be shared with the family during this difficult time.
