Safeway is set to reduce its retail footprint further in 2026. Following a series of closures throughout 2025 and three additional shutdowns earlier this year, the grocery chain has confirmed plans to shutter more supermarket locations.
Strategic Shifts at Albertsons
Owned by Albertsons, the Safeway chain operates more than 900 stores nationwide. According to an article by Yahoo Finance, the company has been re-evaluating its network since a federal judge blocked its planned $24.6 billion merger with Kroger in 2024.
As a result, Albertsons is focusing on the management of its existing properties. This involves cutting underperforming locations to prioritize long-term potential, though specifics regarding which additional brands or stores might be impacted remain undisclosed.

The total number of stores slated for closure this year remains unannounced, but the company is taking a deliberate approach to its portfolio. Addressing these moves, Albertsons CEO Susan Morris told The Street, “We’re continually looking at our store base and making decisions on whether to keep the stores or can we turn them around, can we change the profitability or making the difficult decisions from time to time to exit those stores.”
