Historic Alabama college brings back football games after 80 year absence
President Franklin Roosevelt was president, and the county was in the midst of World War II the last time this college hosted football.
Football is officially returning to the gridiron at Talladega College, marking a historic revival for the institution that hasn't seen the sport on campus since the World War II era.
A New Era for Talladega Athletics
College leadership recently unveiled a strategic partnership with Prep U Collegiate, set to kick off in Fall 2026. Through this collaboration, Prep U Collegiate student-athletes will enroll as full-time Talladega College students, participating in a club football program that will bring select games directly to the campus.
"This partnership represents much more than football," said Talladega College President Willie L. Todd Jr. "Those students participating in this sport will also have the opportunity to experience our commitment to academic excellence."
Restoring a Storied Legacy
Talladega boasts a rich history on the field, including back-to-back Black College Football National Championships in 1921 and 1922. The program was shuttered during World War II, leaving a void that has lasted over 80 years. Now, this initiative serves as a bridge to that past, while sparking renewed dialogue about the future of varsity football at the school.
"Overall, this joint venture enhances the student experience, increases campus engagement, and reconnects us with an important part of our history," Todd noted.
Building Momentum
The path back to the field began in 2021 when the Talladega College board of trustees authorized a formal feasibility study. Preliminary surveys from that time revealed that an overwhelming majority of faculty and staff supported the return of football. Respondents cited numerous benefits, including higher student enrollment and retention, increased school pride, and the potential to attract significant donations and sponsorships.
While this club-level program acts as a major step forward, players will be fully integrated into the fabric of the Talladega community and campus life.
"This collaboration provides our student-athletes with a strong academic foundation and a meaningful collegiate experience both on and off the field," said Marqucee Richardson, president of Prep U Collegiate. For more local sports coverage, keep it locked to 205focus.com.
