Incumbent rep wins GOP nomination for Baldwin County House seat, no opposition in November

Incumbent state Rep. Frances Holk-Jones has secured a victory in the Alabama Republican runoff primary for the District 95 legislative seat. With the primary behind her, Holk-Jones is now the presumptive winner for a second term, as she faces no Democratic opposition in the upcoming November general election.

Runoff Results

According to unofficial results from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, Holk-Jones captured 3,109 votes, or 52.29%, to defeat challenger Joe Freeman. Freeman, a registered investment advisor with a law enforcement background, finished with 2,837 votes, or 47.71%.

This victory follows a competitive primary season. In the May 19 primary, Holk-Jones led the field with 42.5% of the vote, while Freeman pulled 38.5% and candidate Elijah Davidson secured 19%.

A Contentious Path to Victory

The race saw sparks fly leading up to the May primary, characterized by political action committee flyers that accused the incumbent of supporting taxpayer-subsidized college education for undocumented immigrants. House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter publicly dismissed the claims, calling the accusations a bald-faced lie. Following her win, Holk-Jones took to Facebook to express her gratitude to the district.

District 95 Representation

District 95 encompasses significant portions of Baldwin County, including Foley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Elberta, and Perdido Beach, along with the unincorporated areas of Bon Secour, Miflin, Fort Morgan, Josephine, and Ono Island. First elected to the legislature in 2022, Holk-Jones is a local insurance executive and co-founder of the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, which supports the emotional and social needs of Baldwin County youth.

Baldwin County Commission Update

In other local election news, John “Tater” Harris has won the runoff for the Baldwin County Commission District 4 seat. Harris secured 54.85% of the vote, outpacing opponent Brett Gaar. Harris, the owner of Gulf Coast Rental Co. and a community leader in Orange Beach, is the likely successor to outgoing commissioner Charles F. “Skip” Gruber. The seat is expected to be held by Harris after the only Democratic contender, Drew Arredondo, withdrew from the race before the primary.
