Jason Torres and the hit writ in crimson flame
Jason Torres hit a pivotal grand slam, sending Alabama baseball to its first College World Series since 1999.
Back in June 2024, Rob Vaughn was pacing outside Coleman Coliseum, eagerly waiting for a breakthrough. The Alabama baseball coach was hoping to secure a commitment from former Miami infielder Jason Torres. As Vaughn noted on Monday, “He finally pulled the trigger,” marking the start of a journey that would eventually lead to a historic moment for the Crimson Tide.
A Swing for the History Books
That decision paid off in spectacular fashion this past Sunday. With Alabama clinging to a narrow one-run lead over St. John’s in the seventh inning, Torres stepped up to the plate with two outs. In a display of pure clutch performance, he sent a grand slam to right field, etching his name into Alabama lore.
The blast extended the Crimson Tide’s lead to 7-2. Following a rain delay that pushed the final two innings to Monday, Alabama officially secured the win against St. John’s in the Tuscaloosa Super Regional. This victory punches the program’s ticket to the College World Series for the first time since 1999.
A Moment to Remember
Reflecting on the pivotal hit, Vaughn praised his player’s timing. “It’s one of those things, we talk about being your best when your best is needed,” the coach said. “It was a moment that this place will remember forever. This guy will bring his kids back here one day and we will all be talking about that swing. There’s not a more deserving kid.”
For Torres, the approach was simple. Facing a St. John’s pitching staff that had given him trouble previously, the infielder focused on execution. “I was just trying to put the ball in play because the day before I was kind of getting blown away by 90 miles an hour,” Torres explained. “I was just trying to put a fastball in play. I knew I was going to get one.”
Once that opportunity arrived, Torres capitalized, ensuring there was no coming back for the Red Storm. For more coverage on the Crimson Tide’s path to Omaha, keep it locked to 205focus.com.
