June 16 primary runoff in north Alabama: Here’s who is on the ballot

As we head toward the June 16 runoff election, north Alabama voters can expect a standard experience at the polls. While redistricting efforts have dominated headlines elsewhere, officials confirm that it is business as usual for our local elections.

Redistricting and the 5th Congressional District

Residents in Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties will not see any changes to their congressional representation. The lines for the 5th Congressional District remain exactly as they were, and results from the May 19 primary have been officially certified.

Democratic Congressional Race

The Democratic ballot features a key matchup as voters decide who will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Dale Strong in the November 3 general election. The runoff will see plumber and businessman Andrew Sneed square off against educator Candice Duvieilh.

Republican Statewide Primaries

Republicans across Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties have a busy ballot ahead. Voters are set to decide several major races:

  • U.S. Senate: Congressman Barry Moore versus former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson.
  • Lieutenant Governor: Secretary of State Wes Allen versus former state party chairman John Wahl.
  • Attorney General: Assistant Attorney General Katherine Robinson versus former State Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell.

Democratic Statewide Primaries

Democratic voters across all three counties will also participate in the U.S. Senate nomination process, with Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett vying for the spot on the general election ballot.

Education and State Legislature Races

In the District 8 State School Board race, Republican voters in Limestone, Madison, and DeKalb counties will choose between Emily Jones and William Matthews to fill the seat currently held by retiring Republican Wayne Reynolds. Additionally, Democrats in western Madison and eastern Limestone counties will cast their ballots for the District 2 State Senate seat. Rudolph Drake and Alex House are competing for the nomination to face Republican John Roberts, who ran unopposed in the primary, for the seat currently held by retiring Sen. Tom Butler.

Morgan County Local Races

Morgan County voters have two significant local runoffs on their ballots. Blake White and Vaughn Goodwin are facing off for the County Commission District 1 seat. Meanwhile, voters will decide the race for revenue commissioner between John Holley and Mark McCurry, as current Revenue Commissioner Amanda Scott prepares for retirement.
