June 16 primary runoff in north Alabama: Here’s who is on the ballot

As we head toward the June 16 runoff election, north Alabama voters can expect a standard experience at the polls. Residents in Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties will see no impact from redistricting efforts, as the 5th Congressional District boundaries remain unchanged following the certification of the May 19 primary results.

Congressional and Federal Races

Democratic voters have a critical decision to make as they look toward the Nov. 3 general election to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Dale Strong. The runoff features a contest between plumber and businessman Andrew Sneed and educator Candice Duvieilh.

On the Republican side, voters across the three counties will participate in several high-profile runoffs:

  • U.S. Senate: Congressman Barry Moore versus former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson.
  • Lieutenant Governor: Secretary of State Wes Allen versus former state party chairman John Wahl.
  • Attorney General: Assistant Attorney General Katherine Robinson versus former State Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell.

Meanwhile, Democratic voters in the same counties will decide their U.S. Senate nominee in a showdown between Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett.

State and Local Contests

Republican voters in Limestone, Madison, and DeKalb counties are set to select a nominee for the District 8 State School Board seat, currently held by the retiring Wayne Reynolds. The runoff features Emily Jones against William Matthews.

In local legislative news, Democratic voters in western Madison County and eastern Limestone County will choose a nominee for the District 2 State Senate seat. With Republican Sen. Tom Butler retiring, Rudolph Drake and Alex House are vying for the spot, with the winner moving on to face unopposed Republican primary winner John Roberts in the general election.

Morgan County voters also have significant local decisions to make. Blake White and Vaughn Goodwin are squared off in the Republican runoff for the County Commission District 1 seat, while the race for Morgan County Revenue Commissioner—left open by the retirement of Amanda Scott—will be decided between John Holley and Mark McCurry.
