Military members may soon play less at some gas stations

Military personnel may soon see relief at the pump thanks to a new measure currently advancing through the U.S. House of Representatives. As reported by the Military Times, this proposal was included in the House’s version of the fiscal year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, which cleared the House Armed Services Committee on Friday.

Cutting Costs for Service Members

The initiative, introduced by Republican Representative Abe Hamadeh of Arizona, aims to ease the financial burden on service members. Currently, military exchanges determine pump prices by surveying local stations and matching the lowest rates.

Under Hamadeh's new proposal, the Secretary of Defense would be authorized to offer a discount equivalent to the federal fuel tax—currently 18.4 cents per gallon for regular gas and 24.4 cents for diesel. Furthermore, the Secretary would have the authority to implement additional discounts to help offset state and local fuel taxes.

"Fuel is one of the few products sold by exchanges still subject to tax," Hamadeh said in a recent statement. "This discount, equal to the federal fuel tax, shows profound gratitude to our nation’s heroes who have borne the heavy costs of war defending our freedoms."

Rising Fuel Prices

The push for this legislation comes as consumers face rising fuel costs, exacerbated by the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran that began on February 28. According to the American Automobile Association, the national average for regular gas reached $4.22 per gallon on June 5, up significantly from $3.15 per gallon at the same time last year.

In Alabama, the impact is also clear. As of June 5, the state average stood at $3.85 per gallon, compared to $2.74 per gallon one year ago.

The full House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill before entering negotiations with the Senate to finalize the 2027 defense package. 205focus.com will continue to monitor the status of this legislation as it moves through Congress.
