Northeast Alabama CC softball making history in Year 2 World Series run

The rise of Northeast Alabama Community College softball has been nothing short of meteoric. Only one year removed from their inaugural season—which was spent literally building the program from the ground up—the Mustangs have burst into the national spotlight in just their second year under head coach Joe Guthrie.

A Historic World Series Run

The Mustangs are currently competing for a national title at the NJCAA D1 Softball World Series in Oxford. They secured a massive 4-3 victory over JUCO powerhouse Odessa this past Thursday, proving they belong on the biggest stage.

The matchup, originally held at Choccolocco Park, faced a weather delay that forced a relocation to Jacksonville State University. After building a 3-2 lead, the Mustangs saw the game knotted up following a solo home run by Odessa’s Riley Cassiday in the top of the sixth. However, the Mustangs responded immediately in the bottom of the inning. Fyffe native Chloe Hatch came through in the clutch, delivering a sacrifice fly that scored Emma Hindmon to retake the lead for good.

Dominant Season Continues

With this latest victory, the No. 3 ranked Mustangs moved to an impressive 53-4 record on the season. This successful tournament start follows an emphatic 8-0 run-rule victory over Gaston in their opener.

The Rainsville-based squad now sits in the quarterfinals of the winners bracket in the double-elimination tournament. To capture the national title, Northeast Alabama must navigate their way to five total wins in the series. Due to inclement weather in Calhoun County impacting field conditions at Choccolocco Park, the schedule has shifted, with the Mustangs set to face either Northwest Florida State or Paris on Friday morning.

Building on Momentum

Northeast Alabama punched their ticket to the World Series in dramatic fashion after defeating Wallace State-Hanceville in the Alabama Community College Conference Division I Softball Tournament. That victory was sealed by a thrilling two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning by Francesca Lumpp, which bested a No. 13 ranked Wallace State team.

As reported by 205focus.com, tournament play will continue through Friday and Saturday at Choccolocco Park as the Mustangs look to keep their historic run alive. You can read the original coverage here.
