Popular Birmingham nightspot closing weeks after shooting: ‘The end of an era’
“Come get funky with us one last time this weekend."
Nana Funks, a staple of Birmingham’s Lakeview District nightlife, is officially closing its doors. The longtime dance club and bar, which has been a local destination since 2006, announced on Facebook that this upcoming weekend marks its final stretch of operation.
An era comes to an end
In a heartfelt statement, the establishment reached out to the community that sustained it for two decades: “To every customer who became family, every familiar face at the bar, every DJ, every staff member, and everyone who chose to spend their nights with us... THANK YOU. You made Nana Funks what it was.”
The closure follows a period of heightened scrutiny surrounding safety and violence at the venue. In April, a shooting occurred inside the club that left one person seriously injured and another person grazed by a bullet.
Safety concerns and final farewell
The violent incident prompted city officials to review the bar’s business license, citing frustration over a perceived lack of adequate safety protocols. While Nana Funks had previously stated it was implementing increased security measures, such as additional personnel and a stronger police presence to prevent future incidents, the owners have now decided to conclude their 20-year run.
The club will host its final operating hours this Saturday from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. As the management team at 205focus.com notes, the staff is looking to go out on a high note.
“We’ve truly enjoyed the good times, the people, and the relationships built within these walls more than words can say,” the announcement read. “Come get funky with us one last time this weekend as we celebrate the end of an era the only way we know how.”
