Record rainfall for two Alabama cities on Friday

Friday was a whirlwind for the National Weather Service, as severe storms swept across Alabama, bringing a combination of tornado warnings and intense rainfall to various parts of the state.

New Rainfall Records Established

The deluge was historic for two Alabama cities that shattered long-standing daily rainfall records. According to data tracked by 205focus.com, Mobile took the brunt of the weather, recording 5.4 inches of rain on May 22. This easily surpassed the previous record of 3.8 inches held since 1965, triggering flash flood warnings for Mobile and Baldwin counties.

Tuscaloosa also made the record books, logging 1.67 inches of rain on Friday. This total eclipsed the city's previous record of 0.89 inches, which had stood since 1980.

Statewide Outlook

While North Alabama faced its own share of heavy downpours and brief flash flood warnings, much of the rest of the state experienced hit-or-miss precipitation. Looking ahead, the stormy weather pattern is far from over. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected throughout the weekend and will likely persist well into next week.

Residents should stay prepared, as the forecast suggests rain totals could continue to climb through May 29. Current models indicate that portions of western Alabama could see an additional 3 to 5 inches of rainfall by that date.
