The reward for information regarding the tragic shooting death of an 18-year-old Talladega resident has officially increased as the community seeks answers.

Jy’Kavien Wright was killed early on Sunday, May 31, just two weeks after his graduation from Talladega High School. Authorities reported that he was discovered in the 600 block of McAlpine Street with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

A Life Cut Short

Wright was a prominent figure at Talladega High School, serving as the captain of the basketball team with aspirations to continue his athletic career at the community college level. His passing has left the school system in mourning.

Talladega City Schools Superintendent Dr. Quentin Lee previously expressed the community's collective grief, stating, "We are devastated and angry over the tragic loss of this well-respected young man who represented his school so well." Lee added, "He was deeply loved by everyone who knew him, and my heart breaks for his family, friends, classmates, and school staff. He didn’t deserve this."

Reward Increased

Following an initial $1,000 reward offer from Crime Stoppers, Talladega City Councilman Steve Dickerson of Ward 1 announced on Monday that he is contributing $1,000 of his personal funds, bringing the total reward to $2,000.
