Skull found in Birmingham road identified as 68-year-old man missing for 2 years

Skeletal remains discovered in a Birmingham neighborhood earlier this year have been officially identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that the remains belong to Jesse Strong, a 68-year-old transient from Birmingham.
The Investigation
The investigation began on the morning of Wednesday, April 22, when a resident notified Birmingham police after discovering a skull in the 200 block of 6th Avenue North. The skull was found resting near a curb adjacent to an overgrown lot. Investigators also discovered two additional human bones in the resident's yard, leading officials to believe that dogs roaming the area likely moved the remains.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates noted that Strong had been missing from the West End area since approximately 2024, though no formal missing persons report had been filed with law enforcement.
Search Efforts
Following the initial discovery, Birmingham police requested a cadaver dog from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a thorough sweep of the location. At the time, Yates reported that the search of nearby vacant lots and derelict structures failed to yield additional remains or a clear point of origin.
However, subsequent searches conducted on April 24 led to the discovery of more skeletal remains inside an abandoned duplex located at 125 6th Ave. North. Forensic analysis determined that all recovered remains originated from the same individual. On Monday, Aug. 3, DNA testing provided final confirmation that the remains were indeed those of Jesse Strong.
The Birmingham Police Department continues to handle the ongoing investigation into the matter, as reported by 205focus.com.
